Oedipus the King Tragic

Introduction

The paper aims to analyse the tragic play Oedipus by Sophocles with the perspective of Aristotle's theory of tragedy. The focus will be on analysing the characterisation, plot and theme that made Oedipus the King Tragic.

The influence of King Oedipus still stands today. That is a fundamental work of literature world. Tragedy, according to Aristotle, is imitation (mimesis) of an action (praxis) of impeccable character, in a beautiful language. The tragic action involves a change of fortune (peripeteia) move from grace makes the happiness of the protagonist, because one or more errors (hamartia) committed to a disregard of the consequences that may ensue. Oedipus Rex is a true reflection of the Aristotelian theory of tragedy, described in his Poetics.

Tetralogy of which he took part in the Great Dionysia (festivals in honor of the god Dionysus, which included dramatic performances during the month of March) is reputed to have achieved only the second in the dramatic agon, although Oedipus Rex is considered by many the masterpiece of Sophocles (Colonus, Greece, 496 BC). In this work, will be described the central aspects of the tragedy: Oracle of Delphi by Oedipus killed Laius, the Sphinx, incest, exile, etc.

The story of an incestuous wretch whose fate is governed by a myriad of iniquitous decisions was fundamental pillar in the work of the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. Perhaps the theme of fate is at the center of this tragedy for over 2400 years continues to surprise. The beauty of the tragedy, however, is not the suspense that is raised with it, but the aesthetic enjoyment of a work well done, as viewers Greeks knew the outcome beforehand. What they were impressed was the art of Sophocles and the depth and drama that gave his characters who managed to engage the viewer who suffered with them.

Analyzing Oedipus through Aristotle's Theory Elements

The theme or plot of Oedipus Rex is the predestination of fate and folly of human beings to transgress the divine laws. In this tragedy the narrator wants to make it clear that no one can escape his destiny and does so in two stages. When Oedipus's parents learn that their son would kill his father and marry his mother, trying to prevent this from happening by sending the creature as far as possible. Finally, as it was logical at the time, the oracles are true and checked the crazy things that make human beings to transgress the divine laws.

With regard to the fable we can say that the story is about the king of Thebes, Oedipus, who, after escaping from Corinth for fear that they meet the oracles saying that it would become the murderer of his own father and then marry his own mother, looking for the solution to deliver his people from the evil that is.
