Describe the various reimbursement sources of payment in healthcare today.
The U.S. government funds and controls the operations of a number of health care payment systems. Some of these, such as the Medicare program, are exclu-sively federally funded. Others, most notably Medicaid and State Children's Health Insurance Programs (SCHIP), are jointly funded by the federal government and the states. Private insurance systems are participants in both state and federal health plans as, for example, Medicare entities historically referred to as fiscal intermediaries and carriers, but now transitioning to Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) (Sullivan, 2009).
