Learning disability nursing

It was in 1991 that Stephen Dorrell, the then Conservative Health Minister, announced in the House of Commons that people known as 'mentally handicapped' would now be referred to as 'people with a learning disability'. It had been some years before in the 1970s that people with a learning disability had actively campaigned, through People First (a lobbying and campaign group set up by people with a learning disability for people with a learning disability), for the right not to be labelled with a term that had such negative connotations. The term they preferred — 'learning difficulty' — was not an option favoured by professionals or politicians at the time. (Grieg 2001, 119-21)

Rob is working with NDTi as its Chief Executive since May 2008. Before that he expended six and a half years as the Government's National Director for Learning Disabilities. This intended he was to blame for supplying nationwide authority on the consignment of the Valuing People Now policy.

He was the creator of the Valuing People Support Team and organised it until it moved into CSIP in 2005. He was the major scribe of both Valuing People and a key scribe of Valuing People Now. Whilst employed for Government, Rob was furthermore engaged in the work of the Office of Disability Issues, encompassing as Vice-Chair of the Expert Panel that oversaw the development of the Independent Living Strategy. He furthermore was a supplier to numerous other components of wellbeing and communal care policy - searching to encourage their relevance to people with disabilities and other ones who are marginalised in society (Andrew, 2007).

Prior to that, Rob worked in a kind of functions, encompassing organising and designing both mental wellbeing and learning disability services in both localized government and the NHS and organising a voluntary part development programme. In 1995 he established the Community Care Development Centre at King's College (which subsequently moved to become the biggest part of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities) and former to that worked as an advisor with diverse administration - encompassing the NDT in the early 1990's!

Rob's large anxieties have habitually been in how to effect change in public services and humanity to advantage people and assemblies who are marginalised and excluded. This has produced in a variety of concerns over his life and vocation, encompassing activity round paid work, lodgings, racism and the wellbeing service. These, and other localities, will extend to be the aim of his work at the NDTi.

Learning Disability
