Case Study: Nurse Manager Power
Introduction
The role of nurse manager of an acute or critical care unit is one of the most difficult roles in healthcare today. This individual must juggle patient care issues, staff concerns, medical staff relationships, supply inadequacies, and organizational initiatives and then balance all of this with a personal life. The only way in which any of this is remotely possible is if the patient care unit provides a supportive environment for patients, families, and staff. The nurse manager is a pivotal person in this effort: research repeatedly shows that people do not leave their jobs, they leave their managers. This article describes how the nurse manager work with her staff to define, create, and maintain a work environment in which patient care can be improved, people enjoy working, and retention of staff can be increased.

Burden of daily care shifting from trained healthcare professionals to family/loved ones
Increase in number of treating specialists and ancillary healthcare services/products
Diminished resources to meet the financial, behavioral, social, and medical needs of patients with complex conditions
Problems associated with ongoing symptom management
Overload of Internet-based healthcare information, some of which does not accurately reflect current best practices or clinical practice guidelines
Interestingly, however, these same healthcare trends succinctly signify why the numbers of nurses in the US are increasing. Thus, a fundamental responsibility of the nurse manager is to provide effective patient/caregiver support and education. In order to accomplish this, nurse managers need to recognize the influences that healthcare trends are having on effective nursing; identify who is providing the nursing for patients with complex needs; learn how ...
