The purpose of a medical billing service is to read patient claim forms; to present the forms by means of workstation to major clearinghouses and above all input the data according to complex coding systems. The clearinghouses then forward these bills to the insurance organizations and patients who then pay the medical doctor.

The medical billing service is a mounting industry that aims to make available its customers with momentous financial rewards. But at the same time it is an extremely critical field. Millions of people depend on the calculations and computations done by medical billing specialists and therefore it demands them to highly competitive, professional and up-to-date in their filed. In this field fame spreads by word of mouth if the person is professional enough to come up to the requirements of his job.Each year, about 15%-20% of small businesses providing medical billing services drop out of the industry, Border estimates. Many of them don't understand the degree to which clients will rely on them for accounting, consulting and analysis. In addition to filing, medical billing services also provide scheduling activities, special reports and profiling--helping physicians determine which services are performed most often.One cannot ignore the fact that approximately one fourth of all health practice profits are lost due to Under Pricing, Under Coding, Missed Charges or Un-reimbursed Claims. Hundreds of millions of dollars is lost annually due to medical billing errors 2.

It is extremely important that these individuals be highly professional in their approach when it comes to delivering services that is healthcare services to its customers. Their job includes reviewing patients' insurance coverage, explaining the doctor's fee structure to them, the ratio of charges that the customer will have to pay and that that will be covered by his insurance. They are responsible for answering all customer queries regarding their health plans and coverage. The wide scope of this job and the high percentage of customer interaction, places stress on these individuals to be highly professional.

The lodestar of a medical billing specialist is trust. Though much of the work required of a medical billing specialist entails scanning, copying, filing, transcription, and other tasks we may view as thankless are actually essential to our personal and financial security.
