From the perspective of social psychology, group polarization is the result that is the decision made by a group after a group discussion that is more extreme in nature as compared to the decision made by an individual member of the group. The problem-solving process and decision-making process usually carried out in groups. Though the factors influencing decision making and problem solving of an individual still function when a person is in a group, but the interaction within the group determines the result.
How groups become polarized?
When individuals in a group choose sides on the basis of their beliefs and attitudes towards a certain issue, then people on the opposite side, tend to make decisions that are farther from the views of other sides and more intense. In order to influence their opinion, and belief regarding a definite problem people divide themselves into groups thus groups become polarized (Bernstein, 2010).
De-Individualization
The concept of social psychology, about the loss of individual social-identity and gain of the social identity of the group is known as De-Individualization. In De-Individualization a person's behavior becomes controlled more by external norms than by the person's own internal values and morals.
Factors of De-Individualization
De-Individualization has three major factors that are anonymity, diffused responsibility and group size. This engages individuals in various activities though which a different behavior is experienced by that individual.
Behaviors of a person experiencing De-Individualization
Behaviors of a person experiencing De-Individualization include engaging in a hobby, being an element of a large group, contemplation in a variety of other actions. The roles that the individual play become stronger determinants of their behavior than their own attitudes and beliefs (Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo, 2011).
