For instance, physicians-in-training need to decide whether to specialize in pediatrics, orthopedics, psychiatry, Allergy and Immunology, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Gynecology. The field of medical is a vast subject that contributes greatly to the well being of the society. The subject has evolved enormously with the passage of time. Obstetrics and gynecology is a medical and surgical specialty based on the female reproductive system and management of pregnancy and childbirth. A medical practitioner in the field of obstetrics and gynecology is usually referred to as an OB/GYN. The social and cultural history of obstetrics and gynecology is just as important as its development as a medical specialty.
OB-GYN is basically a physician who specializes in health of a female reproductive system (gynecology) and manages women before and immediately after pregnancy (obstetrics). They are the primary doctor's for pregnant woman. They are concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of general health problems stirring in females (Danforth, 2003).
Core Specialization
Ob/gyn's specialize in childbirth, treating and counseling woman throughout their pregnancy, from giving prenatal diagnoses to delivery and postpartum care. They treat both mother and fetus as pregnancy progresses. They perform some surgical operations such as cesarean on patients to ensure babies are delivered healthy and safe. They work in clean and sterilized environments. They sometimes have to refer their patients to other physician's when it is out of physician's treatment.
Common services performed by obstetricians include the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, pregnancy testing, abortions, prenatal care and testing, and the delivery of babies. Common services performed by gynecologists include annual examinations and Pap smears; contraceptive (birth control) prescriptions; the management of menopause symptoms; and the diagnosis and treatment of menstrual problems, infertility, and reproductive system disorders. Modern technological advances have improved obstetric and gynecological care, but have also raised important moral, legal, social, and political issues.
Sub Specialties
Modern sub specialties within the field of obstetrics and gynecology include reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal and fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, critical care medicine, and hospice and palliative care.
