Marketing Perspective on Organ Sales in United Kingdom

Introduction

Selling of Human Organs is a controversial issue in all parts of the world. A large number of deaths are attributed due to the rebuttal of transplantation laws. In other cases, there is a scarcity of organs. Kidney transplantation in U.K has decreased remarkably in recent years. Since a person has two kidneys at his disposal, he can sell one kidney. It doesn't have any side effect. Some people want money that's why they are willing to sell of their kidney. If they are not able to make their ends meet, kidney sale is a feasible option for them. Not only the constitutional laws, but also there are barriers concerning the market.

For any exchange to take place there has got to be existence of a market. A market felicitates the exchange of goods and services between the buyer and seller. There is hardly any product which does not constitute the concept of a market. If we talk about organ selling, there have been different barriers to market.

Since many people are suffering due to risk posed by the lack of organ transplantation, immediate attention must be given to overcome the deficit. The most feasible option would e to have a market receiving organs from living donors. The purpose of the market should be ethical. Keeping ethical guidelines in mind, its goals should be established. It should have measures in place to counter the threat of exploitation.

Development and implementation of a single purchaser system within a confined marketplace would help us tackle the threat of exploitation (Erin et al, 2003).

Absence of Remuneration

It has been observed that there are a lot of double standards prevalent in the ethical buying and selling of human organs. Everyone is paid handsomely except the donor. The donor is the one who is suffering the most pain and going the extra mile to donate. People including the surgeons and medical team are paid but the donor goes unremunerated. Whereas, the receiver is blessed with an important organ. The donor has to end up with no reward even after going the pains of a surgery.

There are serious implications of money in purchase processes. There are some things which money can buy but ethically it should not. In the case of Organs, money should not buy them. One cannot just put a person in trouble for the purpose of money. Even if the person needs money, there are other avenues which he can look for. The monetary exchange destroys the real essence of the product. Kidney selling would make the kidney retarded and corrupted after a few years.

Moral Implications

The moral limits of markets assume higher significance in the organ selling industry. As such an industry is of a sensitive nature, we have got to look at the complexities of the market. It's essential to take a broader look at moral limits of markets. Sometimes markets tend to violate the moralities and ...
