A brief overview of labor/management relationships suggests that there are gaps to be filled and challenges to be met. Most relationships between labor and management leave room for improvement. Management's challenge is to think more broadly than making peace, and to go beyond incremental improvements in a system that remains fundamentally unchanged. It must do more than change its relationship from adversarial to accommodating, or from accommodating to a partnership that misses opportunities or has a high potential to fail or even backfire (Blackard, 22).
