London's transport system & Economic Growth

Executive Summary

The purpose of this report is to inform of transport infrastructure and economic growth. The report gives significant findings of London City and comprehensive discussion on the transportation system of London. Integrated transport system provides a consistent development and operation of all modes of transport in order to meet the transportation needs at minimum cost. Transport for London controls the majority of public transport including the metro, the Docklands Light Railway, the buses and trams but has however no authority over rail services in the Greater London except the lines of the London Over ground.

Introduction

Transport in London is managed mainly by Transport for London (TfL), is one of four areas of competence of Mayor of London. TfL controls the majority of public transport including the metro, the Docklands Light Railway, the buses and trams but has however no authority over rail services in the Greater London except the lines of the London Over ground . TfL also controls the toll roads (Youngson, (1996), p.55).

Discussion

Nicknamed the Tube, the London Underground is the oldest underground transportation system in the world. The first line opened in 1863 and more than 3 million people (nearly one billion per year) use every day its 12 lines today. These lines connect the suburbs to the main central London and major railway stations in the city (OECD, 2006, P.101). The northern part of the city is better served than the south. This results from the nature of the soils north of the Thames, in competition with rail transport on the surface and the fact that London began to develop from the north bank of the river. South London is mainly served by a network of light rail on the surface.

The Underground or London Underground is a network of public transport railway electric (one meter or underground system) that runs both above and below ground throughout the area of Greater London. Transport system is the oldest of its kind in the world. Became operational on January 10th of 1863.The Londoners often refer to as the Underground or in a more familiar as the Tube, because the shape of their tunnels (Cowie, 2009, p.78). Today there are 274 stations open and over 408 miles of active lines, with over three million passengers who use the subway each day (948 million transport operations in the period 2003 - 2004). It is the second metro system in the world (after Shanghai) for miles and the first of the European Union.

Since 2003, the underground organization is part of Transport for London (TfL), which also manages the buses in London, including the famous red double-decker buses. Previously London Regional Transport was the company that owns the London Underground.
