Decision making is an essential skill for career success generally, and effective leadership particularly. Leaders are being asked to answer the question which is being asked and fulfill a growing number of complex and ever changing roles, requiring a closer look at the selection and development of these key players. Perhaps no transition is as challenging as one to first time, first-line leader. Creating is about bringing something into existence. Problem solving is about removing what we don't want. As leaders we are constantly being called upon to solve a constant barrage of problems, to such an extent that we forget what we're trying to achieve.

Applying the principles, values, and practices of Servant Leadership to teaching can make a profound difference on the impact of learning and in the learning experience of both students and teachers. Ten key attributes of Servant Leadership are defined and explained, and translated to the education context, introducing the notion of the "Servant Teacher." The paper compares and contrasts the more typical/traditional lecture and course format with one that embodies servant teaching. Continuing to teach in ways that replicate command and control, hierarchy, and power disparities that promote dependence, compliance, and passivity rather than autonomy are antithetical and counterproductive in a time when flexibility, initiative, responsibility, ownership, self-direction, creativity, empowerment, and teamwork and collaboration are more essential than ever. Servant leadership seems to touch an innate need in many and probably harks back to the beginning of time. Servant leadership is about moving people to a higher level of individual and communal self-awareness by leading people at a higher level. Its principal tenet is that it is the duty of a leader to serve followers, his or her key role being to develop, enable, and support team members, helping them fully develop their potential and deliver their best. From this perspective, in a world of organizations servant-leaders are considered humble stewards of their organization's resources and capabilities.
