Psychophysics

Psychophysics is commonly defined as the quantitative research department of perception, considering the relations between observable stimuli and responses, and the reasons for these relationships. This, however, a very narrow view of the impact it had on many things in psychology. Since its inception, psychophysics has been based on the assumption that the human perceptual system is measureing tool brings results (experience, solutions, answers) that can be systematically analyzed. Because of its long history (more than 140 years) (Steingrimsson, Luce, 2006), its experimental methods, data analysis and model of the basic perception and cognitive processes have reached a high level of sophistication. For this reason, many techniques originally developed in psychophysics have been used to unravel problems in learning and memory, the measurement, as well as social psychology. Many of the classical methods of psychophysics and the theory was formulated in 1860 when Gustav Theodor Fechner published the Elements der Psychophysik. He coined the term "psychophysics", described in research related to physical stimuli, how they are perceived, and described the philosophical underpinnings of the field. Fechner wanted to develop a theory that can address the question to mind when describing the relations between the world and how it is perceived. He was influenced by the work of the German physiologist Ernst Heinrich Weber Fechner formed the basis of psychology as a science.
