China and Taiwan have grown impatient with the diplomacy while keeping island alienated from the communist mainland from 1949. It has essentially maintained a status quo relationship. The KMT i.e. the nationalist Kuomintang leaders of the Republic of China argued that the Communist Chinese government is illegitimate and the mainland is legally their property. It was witnessed in 1949 after losing fleeing to Taiwan and absconding to Taiwan while losing the civil war. Beijing although regarded Taiwan as an apostate province and repeatedly tried to influence the Island to negotiate a return to the fold. In 2008, KMT regained power after bringing in opposition for a long period of eight years.
The People's Republic of China argues that Taiwan is inalienable part of it and cannot be separated, there is only one China. The consensus reached in 1992 whereby Taiwan was bound, claims that there lies only one China and that the principle can be interpreted as desired. The consensus was disregarded by the Taiwan's former president Chen Shui-bian while KMT took it as a starting point for further negotiations. 1979 was followed by reestablishing relations between United States and Beijing by signing a joint communiqué that reaffirmed one china principle. As per the communiqué, United States government acknowledged the fact that there is only one China and Taiwan is a part of it. At that time the diplomatic relations were terminated between the President Jimmy Carter and ROC government and just few months later the Taiwan Relations Act 1979 avowed United States support for the Island's democratic system. Ever since, this has been a source of sporadic conflict, it makes a displeasure situation when Beijing realizes that these principles have been violated.

Taiwan continued to import its weapons from United States and other countries and in the period between 2000 and 2007, Taiwan imported $8.4 billion in arms deliveries globally. The prime exporter of arms for Taiwan was United States and they imported $4.1 billion worth of arms purchases. Taiwan relied on United States for strategic security and planning and guarantees were made more concrete under the administration of George Bush who promised complete security to defend Taiwan. China has been continuously protesting United States supply of arms and ammunitions to Taiwan, and due to this pressure, United States froze their arms sales to Taiwan but President George W. Bush was unwilling to publicly claim the suspension. While, the unofficial freeze ended in the late 2008 and United States agreed to sell Taiwan military equipment worth $6.4 billion. As a result of this transaction, china pulled their hands back and in protest, they suspended their military contacts with the United States while it was again resumed in the following year 2009.
