The organisation this paper chose for this assignment is called J Sainsbury plc. J Sainsbury plc is one of the world's leading retailers, playing a part in the lives of 15 million customers a week. John James and Mary established Sainsbury Supermarkets in 1869. Sainsbury's Supermarkets employs over 138,000 people. Of these 70 per cent are part time and 30 per cent are full time. 58 percent of colleagues are women. A large Sainsbury's Supermarket offers over 23,000 products - 40% of these are Sainsbury's own brand. Sainsbury's serve nearly 10 million customers at 432 stores throughout the UK each week. Of these stores, 17 are in Scotland, nine in Wales and seven in Northern Ireland. Nearly 60 percent of their stores are in town-centre or edge-of-centre location. Sainsbury's mission is to be the consumers' first choice for food, delivering products of outstanding quality and great service at a competitive cost through working faster, simpler and together. Shaw's Supermarket has been fully owned by J Sainsbury plc since 1987 and prior to that was part owned from 1983. Shaw's serves over four million customers a week at 168 stores in the six New England states of the USA. Sainsbury's Bank opened in February 1997, the first bank to be opened by British supermarket. It is joint venture owned 55 percent by J Sainsbury plc and 45 percent by Bank of Scotland plc, offering telephone banking 24 hours a day. Home base was founded in 1979 and opened its first store in 1981. In 1995 the Company bought Texas Homecare and the acquired stores were converted to the Home base format. Home base serves over 1.5 million customers a week at 297 stores throughout the UK employing 17,000 people of which 12,000 are part-time.

Every business has one or more business activity. The core business activity is the most important activity for the business and usually generates the largest amount of income. Sainsbury's has a core business activity of selling food and consumable items. But it also sells flowers, newspapers and magazines, tobacco products, alcohol and some larger stores, pharmaceutical products.
It also operates as a bank - customers can open a savings account with Sainsbury's and pay in or withdraw money when visit a store. The aim is to provide 'one stop shopping' where customers can get everything they need under one roof. Sainsbury's Supermarket sells their own brands as well as other brands.
