CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Introduction
Healthcare industry of a country is a very important sector. The significance of this industry is huge in every country. It is the duty of the government of the country to ensure that the quality of the healthcare delivery system is up to date and people are getting proper healthcare facility in their country. Healthcare industry of a country should be the one which has all the latest technology and is in line with the changing environment; however, unfortunately, this is not the case. The healthcare industry is the one which is lagging behind. It does not have up to date technology, which is why, it is suffering terms of quality, as well. The quality of the healthcare is not up to the mark which is adversely impacting the patients.
Problem Statement
The main problem with the healthcare industry is the implementation of the information technology. The advent of the latest technology should be incorporated in the healthcare system so that proper facilities can be provided to the patients. The main concern revolving around the healthcare industry is the implementation of HIT (Health Information Technology). The issue is that the healthcare providers have not implemented the latest technology which is causing problems.
Background of the Study
A study conducted by Peirce (2004) compared the medical costs as compared to wages, and it was found that the costs are much higher than the wages. This shows that the high healthcare costs are due to the fact that the errors in medicating have increased. This has resulted in the loss of many lives. The life expectancy rate in many countries including Spain, France, New Zealand is same and people spend a lot on the healthcare. This is the reason why the issues should be resolved, and the medicating errors should be reduced. The implementation of Electronic Health Record will help in resolving these issues.
Significance of the Study
As per Pierson, and Williams (1994, p. 29), healthcare organizations are "increasingly under pressure to juggle care, quality and cost effectiveness in the wake of reform and competition." According to them, the healthcare providers are finding it hard to assure quality and cost effective health issues. This is the reason, the implementation of Electronic Health Record (EHR) is discussed in this study. The implementation of this program is not very costly. It will help the healthcare providers to provide good quality service to the patients, which in turn will help in reducing clinical errors.
Rationale of the Study
Rascati and Borel (1995) suggest that the healthcare providers have tried a lot to overcome these issues and come up with a solution that will help them; however, they have been unsuccessful. They tried to reduce the medical errors and attempted to develop their own solutions, but ...
