Background of the study
The Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) market of India has shown an immense amount of growth in terms of economic progress since the past few years. It is only possible because the market of India is so huge that more and more new companies are entering the market in order to cater such a huge market. Any product launched in the market, makes its own place by catering a certain lot of the total population of India. Be it cosmetics, eatables, technical or any other products, the market has a huge demand for all these products. Smoking is one of the biggest problems amongst all the problems related to the human health. It is by far been one of the most important issue of this century. Smoking is an entirely preventable event that has been present in the development of society, contributing in significant morbidity and mortality, even at the expense of developments which have public health case issue (Relyea, 2003, pp 24).
India, just like the other parts of the world has been severely affected by the smoke issue. There has even been a huge impact on the FMCG market of India because of tobacco and its related products. But good progress has been made by different government bodies and other NGO's because of which recognition has been given to prevent and secure public health and society. Different actions have been taken to lessen the use of tobacco in the country through different means in order to protect our future generations to be carried away by the harmful effects of smoking. India has been very conscious of the harmful effects of tobacco use, disease burden and related social and economic costs of health care. Over the period, various administrative measures were taken to prohibit tobacco smoking in public places and regulate the sale of tobacco products and their advertisements. A serious need was felt for framing a comprehensive national legislation on tobacco control, which would ensure uniform and effective enforcement of measures to achieve desired results. After detailed deliberations, with a view to protect public health by prohibiting smoking in public places, banning advertisements of the tobacco products, banning the sale of tobacco products to minors and near educational institutions, prescribing strong health warnings including pictorial depiction on tobacco products and regulation of tar and nicotine contents of tobacco products(Brian, 2006, pp 55).
