This paper is an account of the homeland security of United States. It highlights the background and history of the security policies within the nation. A brief account of the scope and the implementation strategy is also mentioned. IntroductionHomeland security is the term refers to the security efforts to protect United States of America against terrorist activities. It is a national effort to keep terrorist attacks away from within the US boundaries, top reduces United States vulnerability to terrorism and minimizing the damage of the attacks. The purpose was to form a united sates department of homeland security after September 11 attacks. Homeland defense; therefore, is the protection of the territory, sovereignty, population and infrastructure of unites States of America. The concept extends responsibilities of government agencies towards the national security. The homeland defense includes 187federal departments and agencies. It includes the united states guards, the federal emergency management agency, the United States Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the United, the Transportation Security Administration, and the remaining others that comprise of US intelligence community (Sauter, 2005).The administration of George W. Bush consolidated these activities under United States department of homeland security. As a result of this, a new department of Homeland Security of 2002m was established. Most of the homeland security activities remain outside of DHS, for instance the CIA and FBI are not the component of the department. However, other executive departments like department of defense and the department of health and humans service play a crucial role in many aspects of homeland security, the security activities are coordinated by the white house by homeland security council (Sauter, 2005).The term homeland security became common in unites states after the September 11 attacks. Prior to these attacks, it was used in inadequate policy circles. The term "security of the American homeland" appeared in 1998 report known catastrophic Terrorism: Elements of a National Policy. According to office of management and budget of USA, homeland security finding comprises of 21 % of the consolidated US homeland security. Whereas, about 40% of the budget funds non security activities such as coast guards search and rescue operations.
