Homeland Security is the term used for the efforts a State make to maintain its security level and ensure a peaceful and terror-free environment in the country. Special attention was given to this term in the year 2011 when a significant event of terrorist attack took place in the United States. This measure for security is adopted by the State, to take preventative measures for combating terrorism and recovering process after any damage is caused by terrorist attacks. Response to disasters and immigration checks is also covered under the scope of Homeland Security. In this paper, we have to analyze that the intelligence is central to everything DHS does.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a department of cabinet established by the federal government of United States. Creation of this department was in response to the 9/11 attack with a primary motive of protection of state against terrorist activities and attacks. Department of Homeland Security works to ensure the safety and protection of the assets and citizens of the State. Their responsibilities include counterterrorism, border security, immigration, cyber security and the preparedness, response and recovery of after disaster effects.
The Central Intelligence Agency, together with the National Security Agency, the government agency of the United States is responsible for the collection, analysis and use of intelligence through espionage abroad, and whether governments, corporations or individuals that may affect national security. The CIA is not allowed to spy on Americans, but it performs certain operations on the territory of the United States since the year 1960. One of these operations is the recruitment of illegal people who are in the U.S. so that they provide information on their country of origin or third world countries.
The CIA gathers information only on foreign countries or people, not about the United States or its citizen. The CIA has two missions; the first one is to provide timely and accurate intelligence on the threat to America's security. While, the second mission is to conduct counter intelligence to protect our nation's secrets when there is a threat to our national security. The CIA's activities in foreign countries are limited by law. The CIA does their work by taking risks to get the job done, by working with their co-worker throughout the agency and the intelligence community, personal and organizational integrity, by having the total participation of a diverse and an exceptional work force, accepting accountability for their action, adapting to a changing world environment and evolving customer needs. They keep going a continuous improvement in everything that they do. They perform intelligence and counter intelligence activities. Only the president can decide when the CIA should undertake a covert action. The National Security Council recommends these actions (William, 2002).
