One way to prevent diseases caused by high plasma cholesterol concentration is to know what the possible symptoms that can cause high cholesterol. This is of utmost importance to avoid complications and enjoy a better quality of life. This paper is based on the information obtained from a video that tells about the five major causes of high cholesterol. The presenter in the video emphasized that causes of high cholesterol are multiple and often include inherited genetic dysfunctions which determine an overproduction of cholesterol and an ineffective elimination in the system.

The documentary explains why people who keep strict diets and exercise can often do develop heart disease and other diseases associated with a high cholesterol level. A high cholesterol level can be caused by: physical inactivity, poor diet, obesity, age, sex and genetic inheritance. A sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and obesity are in our time the most common causes of suffering cholesterol. This leads to heart disease and stroke. Most of the population suffers from weight problems due to improper diet (too much saturated fat, carbohydrates and salt) and lack of exercise. To prevent the development of complications in overweight patients are advised to practice a sport or do some exercise and a healthy diet. Age and sex are other factors to consider. Although people may have high cholesterol at any age, the levels increase gradually with age. Although stroke is more common in men, women may also have heart disease, but rarely develop any problems before menopause. Heredity is another important factor that contributes to cholesterol problems. People affected by cholesterol problems are due to genetic dysfunctions that either produce excessive amounts of this substance or are unable to remove it properly. Under these assumptions, cholesterol levels are very difficult to control. People with high cholesterol who have a family history of heart disease should supplement their medication with proper diet and regular exercise. Most people, especially those whose only risk factor is a way of life, can reach their normal levels of cholesterol and triglycerides with:

Exercising

Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, oats, oil of good quality and avoid foods with saturated fats (read the details at an elevated cholesterol diet )

The normal amount of sleep (8 hours per day)

Give your body weight back to normal

Avoid drinking alcohol

Quit smoking

Many experts say that people, who are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, not reduce it only by changing the diet. Nevertheless, a healthy diet will have many health benefits, not only for cholesterol.
