There is two fundamental challenges team face. They are to accomplish tasks and to maintain and increase team cohesiveness. It can be accomplished by adapting distinctive roles. First is task facilitation role where member roles help team accomplish the goals. Relationship-building roles are member roles where team increase and maintain cohesiveness. Third is to block roles where the behavior inhibited by team performance or by any member is blocked. Teams need creates a good balance between the task/relationship roles. Any member will not be allowed to perform more than one role. Role performed would be according to the strengths of the individual. Roles will not be overplayed (Ford, 2011).
Solutions to Overcome the Challenges
Following are the solutions to overcome challenges faced by the team:
Be comfortable with conflict
Every member holds a different view about conflict. Collectivists are the one who view conflict as a social failure. For them getting along and harmony is more important. Their comfort level with conflict situations is low. They adopt avoidance to conflicts. Conflict should be dealt in a comfortable manner.
Involvement of third parties
Most of the time, team members are more comfortable within a team rather with an outsider. On the other hand, an individual prefers an impartial outsider for dealing with conflicts. The outsider prefer because his/her relationship towards the conflict would be remote. The role of the third party is also influenced by racial proportions. In western culture, third party is not a decision maker. The mediators provide an evaluation of the team which includes its strengths and weaknesses. On the other hand, there are a few mediators who do not make evaluations and are simply facilitative.
