Genetically modified food (GMF) is perhaps one of the most important and controversial issues that occur at this time, it is a global issue that requires much thought and forward thinking. There is much controversy surrounding GMF, environment, health, livelihoods, property rights and the future of agriculture are just some of the areas of development and implementation of GMP affected. GMF such a complex issue, and there are many stakeholders, these include, governments, multinational corporations, scientists, farmers and members of the general population, all of which have their own problems and programs. It is imperative that some guidelines put in place to ensure equality of all participants and uniform rules across the board, Alister McIntyre warned, "the absence of a rational and coherent set of procedures means that power and money are often influenced by such ethical considerations are evaluated. (McIntyre, 1998, p.87)
Discussion
There are many ethical questions raised by the issue of GMF, as it will affect the environment, science does have some limits, and what the rights of consumers and farmers? These are just some of the questions that were raised.
Stakeholders GMF come from all sides the debate, supporters believe that society must take a calculated risk with this new technology, and opponents believe that the risk is simply not worth it (Hindmarsh, Lawrence and Norton, 1998, p.7).
Both parties to this dispute have valid arguments for and against GMF. Supporters, mostly scientists, Biotech corporations, large farms and some politicians are often selfish in nature, that is, they act out of self interest. These groups argue that the GMP will not only better tasting and more nutritious food, but more of it. Plants will be created that can survive in extreme conditions, including salinity and drought. Scientists will be able to improve the quality of food by creating plants with enhanced protein and vitamins, and build plants that are pest and herbicide-tolerant, leading to a better ratio of plant seed yield. GMF, in their opinion, will contribute to the eradication of world hunger and reduce agricultural pollution. (Http: / / biotechbasics.com / benefits.html)
Although there are many benefits that can arise with the development of GMF, the opponents, mostly altruistic, that is, they act in the interests of others, warn that the risks associated with this new technology is too great that there are simply too many unethical consequences. The main issues concern the enemy can be divided into four key areas: environment, consumer health, the commercialization of science and exploitation of vulnerable populations.
Opponents warn that we do not know enough about the effects of GMF will have on the environment, there are many unresolved issues regarding the impact of the release of genetically modified plants in the ecosystem. One to predict the result of the release of GM plants that like them, to withstand insects and herbicides, these plants can become "superweeds", as they would have many advantages over the natural flora.
