The paper aims to explain the concept of gender identity in broader perspective with respect to physiological concept. Furthermore, the relation between the concept of gender identity and androgyny is discussed in the paper.
The construction of gender identity is a complex process which involves biological, social, cultural and psychological context. Gender identity can briefly be said a part of various features i.e. biological sex, social gender and mental sex (Snyder, 2006, pp. 526-537). The sum of these variables determines a person's gender identity, which describes how exactly the an indidual perceives him or herself. There are many different ways of looking at sex and what sex is composed, especially in an academic context. Childrens` gender identity begins to develop as early as the age of two, and this happens when the child understands gender constancy. Gender identity development affects the environment, role models, and the child's own choice (Wilcove, 2008, pp. 288-309).
The gender identity gradually and becomes established in children and the child to understand the continuity of sex. Most two years old already know to be either girls or boys. In this perspective the development of identity is a long task that begins in childhood, becomes very important in adolescence and continues throughout life. The researcher proposed that identity resulted in three processes: biological, psychological and social. However, even if your model of identity development was striking and generated controversy in various fields, the different connotations around the term meant that this construct was difficult to investigate. In the extent to which a person experiences this continuity can be differentiated from the rest (Butler, 1999, pp. 81 - 90). Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate in the conceptualization of identity formation not only their personal and social, but also temporal continuity captures the idea that a person over time.
Background
Androgynous persons are those who have a mixed identification between male and female. Beyond the scientific studies, however, androgyny may be the answer to the killing of socio-cultural stereotypes, too rigidly anchored to gender roles and representations of a male and a female still deeply rooted in the collective imagination (Snyder, 2006, pp. 526-537). Inside every woman is represented a female identity, as well as the expression internalized and often manifested than men, and in every man there is an obvious identification with their own sex, as much as expression internalized and acted a certain sensitivity, softness and sweetness.
In this approach, gender is understood as an organized pattern of social relations between men and women, the basic institutions of a constructed- society. The theory of social construction of gender is based on two assumptions i.e. gender constructed through socialization, division of labor, it is formed with the system gender roles, the family, the media, and gender is constructed and by at the level of consciousness making the set community norms and adjustment to them (Wilcove, 2008, pp. 288-309).
