Published in 1990, Friday Night Lights: city, team, and the Dream tell the story of the town and high school football team that defines it. The book follows one season in 1988 Permian Panthers from Odessa School, Texas, as they set their sights on the coveted championship in Texas. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author HG Bissinger, the book offers a rare in small towns of America. Image Bissinger in Odessa was perceived negatively, and some, as a result, his life was still threatened. Other locals, however, picked up the book at face value, realizing that it was simply an effort to depict a small town and its beloved football team.
Located in the city with a population of about 90.000, when the novel was written, the Permian hung all their hopes on high school football team. Every boy in the Permian dream right up to the Panthers, a team whose record was unsurpassed. Young girl hopes to become Pepettes who, when they were not cheering were baking cookies for the team.
Friday Night Lights is an in-depth study of the city, but it also serves as a character study of some players and coaches. Brian Chavez, a tight end team, is a Mexican-American student who became a farewell of his class and eventually comes to Harvard after the end of the Permian. Gary Gaines is a coach who faces the endless pressure from the city and the financial sponsors team.
