Introduction

The book, “The Goal” is written by Eliyahu M. Goldblatt is a novel which has and still is changing the management thinking throughout the western world. In this book, the protagonist is a manager of a firm which is going downhill. During a time, a certain constraint limits the the entire system throughput. When this constraint is resolved by the manager, another constraint pops up. the book revolved around the identification of the existing limiting constraint and raising it which is followed by the identification ad determining another limiting constraint. Eliyahu Goldratt, wrote his book "The Goal" and began the development of a new management philosophy called "Theory of Constraints" (TOC). The TOC was born as a solution to an optimization problem in production. Today it has evolved into a concept that proposes ways to integrate and improve all levels of the organization, from the core processes to everyday problems.

Ten OM Decisions

Operational management is all activities related to the deliberate transformation of materials, information or customers. Operating function includes activities that result in manufactured goods and services supplied by the organization to the external environment. Organization may vary greatly in nature operating functions (Goldratt, 2012). Operational management is understood or "managing down" which makes the public management into your organization to increase its ability to achieve their political purposes. It includes changes in organizational structure and system of roles and functions, the choice of leaders and mid-level advisor, the process of training of permanent staff, continuous improvement of the functioning of the organization with its current technology and the introduction of technical and strategic innovations in line with ongoing projects.

The ten Operation Manager's decision areas as per the book are as follows:

Design of Goods and Services

The most essential job of the OM is to determine which goods and services are they going to offer to the consumers (Choi & Krause, 2006). They have to appropriate select the goods or services they want to offer as well as the target audience. The OM also has to decide what will be the designs of the products they will be offering.

Managing Quality

The management of quality of the product is also a crucial job of the project. This is the responsibility of the OM to classify and define the quality of the products to the employees of the organization. The OM has to ensure that the quality of the products is effectively maintained so that the customers are satisfied with the products (Greaver, 2008).

Process and Capacity Design

The process and capacity of the products are also determined by the OM. The designs and equipments which will be utilized for these processes and capacity is also decided and determined by the OM.
