Introduction

The event management is the process of design, planning and production of conferences, festivals, ceremonies, conventions or other meetings, each of which can have different purposes. It refers to the purposeful and systematic planning of events (trade shows, conferences, sales presentations, investor meetings, press conferences, sports and cultural events) as sales policy instrument or image and opinion formation enhancing measures to enforce the company's goals and to build up the reputation as well as the top management in particular, in the context of marketing communications (Allen, 2002). In addition to marketing tools, techniques of production from other areas (show, theater, performance) are applied.

The organization of events is the application of management policies necessary for the creation and production of events in commercial, cultural, celebratory, and relational aspects. It is a sector in constant growth since 2000 and has become one of the strategic and operational levers that must be applied in the context of integrated communication in the development of any communication plan.

Scope of the Paper

This paper will have its focus aligned with the most popular event with respect to sport and games i.e. Olympics. The paper will analyze the main characteristics of, and trends with regards to the event, discuss it with a range of social science perspectives, and planning and management of the event. It will as well talk about the impact of Olympics in the global, national and local context.

Characteristics in Olympics

The Olympics refers to the multidisciplinary sports events involving athletes from around the world in ancient Greece. It was dedicated to the god Zeus. There are two types of Olympics: the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics, which take place at an interval of four years. The organization responsible for conducting the event is International Olympic Committee (IOC) (International Olympic Committee London, 2012). The Olympic Games, formally known as the Games of XXX Olympaid is the most popular sporting event in the world. The Olympics of 2012 in London started from July 27th till August 12th 2012.

The current Olympic Games were inspired by the eighth century BC organized by the ancient Greeks in the city of Olympia, between the years 776 C. and 393 DC. The first edition of the so-called Olympics of the modern era took place in Athens, capital of Greece. Since that time, Summer Olympics have been held every four years in different parts of the planet, the only exceptions being the editions of 1916, 1940 and 1944, due to the outbreak of World War I and World War II. The Olympic symbol consists of five rings represent the five continents of the world: Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. They are intertwined to symbolize the friendship of all people for sports. In all competitions at Olympic Games, a ranking list is created. The eternal medal is a collection of all the medals, ordered by the participating countries, which have been awarded in the history of the Games.
