CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
This chapter reviews the literature relating to the role of Enterprise Ireland and the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and sets the scene for my research question. It provides a general background to the subject area of enterprise and job creation or assistance and its relationship with Foreign Direct Investment, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. The literature review traces the links between Government Policy at the strategic level and small to medium sized enterprise. It examines different emerging discourses with a particular emphasis on the influence of policy and the role of Enterprise Ireland and other enterprise agencies. It particularly explores the contribution of Enterprise Ireland in supporting indigenous companies. This provides the backdrop to examine business and economic frameworks used in other countries and contrasts the different approaches adopted to support small-medium enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs.
Problem Statement
The problem statement that shall be used as primary parameter for the purpose and analysis is “Evaluation of the role of Enterprise Ireland and the support provided to Irish indigenous companies”
