Dengue and dengue fever are a serious public health problem in tropical and subtropical areas of the United States. During 2011, Member States reported 979,774 cases of dengue, of which 15,860 had severe forms requiring hospitalization and 692 died. This year, outbreaks of dengue, with a total number of cases and deaths registered exceeded the historical data, in Paraguay, Panama and the Caribbean countries and territories, English and French as Aruba, Bahamas, St. Lucia. We also observed the introduction of dengue 4 virus in Panama and in some states of Brazil where there was previously circulated.
