“Environmental Psychology” as a specific discipline in psychology has lost much of its visibility as an exclusive area in psychology over the past decade. Find their origin in architectural psychology, ecological psychology relates to the relationship between people and their environment. In the campaign to improve the psychiatric hospitals for nearly fifty years ago, the architects turned to psychologists for help in understanding the cognitive and social behaviour and their attitude to the way the building was constructed around them. As the relationship between architects and psychologists progress in other areas, such as park design, colour coordination and placement of furniture, the field of environmental psychology was born.
Ecological psychology rather simple relationship between people and their environment. It can be divided into many areas of research, such as town and urban planning, where the capacity of communities and rehabilitation of urban areas depends on a psychologist to help understand how a person will depend on the specific design choices (Frank McGuire & Newhouse 2000). Health and environment other subfield of psychology, where researchers look to understand how our environment affects our health. Ecological psychology is based on the large volume of disciplines, from anthropology, history and sociology, urban design, geography and architecture, in order to help bridge the gap between man and his environment.
Theoretical approaches
Basic theoretical approach in the field of environmental psychology, known as ecological psychology, was popular in the work of JJ Gibson and Roger G. Barker. Both emphasized the importance of studying the behaviour of people within a particular environment. In other words, they argued, it is impossible to properly install the theories of human behaviour, not knowing the environment that the human in. In ecological psychology, Baker said that the changes in human behaviour, depending on the environment are too harsh, not to be taken into account. A man will behave quite differently if he or she works at the plant compared with a visit to his or her mother-in-Law's House (2008 Barker). Gibson made the same argument, stating that in order to fully understand the behaviour, learning environment, where the behaviour occurred, it is necessary.
Other theoretical approach, called the phenomenological approach, attempts to put the emergence of a phenomenon in the environmental psychological study of an event that stands in its own right, not affected by previous theories or assumptions.
