Chapter One: Introduction
Many organisations have undergone various changes and a fundamental restructuring in the current era. They have become less mechanistic and more organic, with lesser management levels and more flexible modes of operations. The function and importance of the Human resource management is been shifted to the new approach of managing and structuring the organisations. These developments are resulted in implicating the process of appraisal practice.
I would like to do my research on my previous work organisation, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Private Limited based in Chennai, India. The research would deal with the effectiveness of performance appraisal system in the organisation and its relevance towards human capitals. I have chosen this topic in particular because the data with regards to this topic is easy to collect and analyse. The concept of Performance Appraisal in an organisation also being one of my areas of interest has contributed to my choice of this topic. This research is meant to help in understanding the effectiveness of performance appraisal system and the attitude towards it in the organisation.
Aims and objective:
The aim of this research is to study about the Effectiveness of Performance appraisal and its relevance towards the Human capital of 'Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Private Limited, Chennai. This covers the attitude and response about the appraisal scheme from the perspective of the employees. The reason for carrying out personal appraisal is to provide individuals with an opportunity to say how they could improve their performance and to state the support they need to do so. When this is done properly the effect is considerable and the resulting overall improvement in performance makes the effort well worthwhile.
Increase productivity by introducing clear performance standards and priorities at the beginning of the performance cycle
Encourages good employee relations by providing opportunity for timely feedback by the managers to the team members.
Reinforce supervisor's capability to manage staff by giving a cogent, “objective” basis for appraise performance and encouraging them to identify ways to improve future performance.
