Educating for Health

Introduction

Today's world where we live is filled with economic troubles and recession. Every new day this world faces a new challenge. In such era of recession, inflation and high cost of everything it becomes difficult for an individual to spend on healthcare. Our government also spends a mammoth amount on healthcare. In order to combat the high cost of the healthcare government presents healthcare reforms. In this situation, what can lend a hand in combating this problem is getting education and information about the variegated issues of healthcare. Healthcare educational institutes make attempts to raise awareness among public and citizens so that they can better take care of themselves which in turn would make them to spend less on healthcare. For this purpose, healthcare fairs play a vital role. The aim and objective of this paper is to propose an education plan through which an attempt is made to provide healthcare education to a specific and selected client group. In order to provide healthcare education to the people the method that is chosen is of arranging and organizing a health fair. The aim of this health fair is to provide education about obesity. In the following part of the paper a discussion is undertaken to talk about this educational plan of health fair from variegated perspectives.

Selected Client Group

The client group that is selected to whom this educational program would be provided is of school children age between 6 to 11 years. The aim and objective of this assignment is to plan out an educational program on obesity to the children of a school. For this purpose, a school in the community would be selected. The reason why this client is chosen is that first of all obesity is increasing among children and secondly, when these children have knowledge and information about obesity they would be cautious about what they eat and what they do and they would ultimately lead a healthy and fit life (Mason and Butler 2010, 18). Obesity in infancy is not solely a problem in that age group, but is related to persistence of obesity into later childhood and adult life (Ogden 2007, 44). With extensive data from studies on twins and on families, researchers have established that obesity is influenced by genetic factors (Lavereck 2009, 24). However, genetic background alone cannot explain the increasing prevalence of obesity in developed countries (Tinder and Reynolds 2000, 78). The prevalence of obesity (triceps skin fold measurement >85th percentile) among children 6 to11 years old increased 54% in the years between 1963-1970 and 1976—1980. In the same period, the prevalence of super obesity (triceps skin fold measurement >95th percentile) increased 98% among children in the same age range (Scriven 2010, 48).

Need Analysis of the selected client

It is evident that needs assessment efforts can no longer be viewed as restricted to the compilation and consideration of solely health status measures (Wilson and McAndrew 2000, 96). Given the role of needs assessment is to identify and also address ...
