When football clubs began in Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century that is what they were - just clubs, voluntary associations formed by groups of men gathered to play games against other similar groups. During this period, football was a game very rough and ready, and often there is often disagreement over the rules, the use of hands or feet, the number of players and the amount of time to play games. Football, as we know it today has its origins in the ancient forms of violence 'popular' sport that is still playing in some English villages and later encrypted forms of football, which grew out of English public schools. Sport in schools is used as a disciplinary measure in the induction and leadership development in middle-class children. Some public schools took the handling variant of 'football', then became the amateur rugby (south) and professional rugby league (north). At this stage the sport in England was still dominated by the ancient traditions of south-based public schools, most administrators of principles, and indeed all the early winners of the FA Cup, came from this type of fund.

The first paid professional players had played football in Britain at least since 1876 (Vamplew, 1988) and were formally recognized by the football authorities in 1885. Three years later, in 1888, the Football League was formed consisting initially of 12 clubs from central and northern region.
