Overview

This paper compares and contrasts three paintings from the very famous Philadelphia Museum of Art. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the work of three paintings from the museum and comment positively on the work of two of those paintings and discuss one painting which did not appeal much to the eyes (in terms of artwork and finesse). The two paintings that seemed brilliant and appealing were 'Annunciation' by Henry Ossawa Tanner which the museum acquired in 1899 and Prometheus Bound by the famous artist Peter Paul Rubens, acquired later during the early 1900s. The painting that is being criticized in this paper is River Landscape by Thomas Gainsborough, painted between the years 1611-12.

The paintings that are analyzed in this paper were not given too much research. There is only one reason for such a decision. Extensive secondary research on the paintings would have influenced the perception of the viewer towards the paintings and the opinion of the observer (the writer) would have mingled with the opinions of other critics who would have posted their views online. The research done on the paintings comes from a brief interview with the museum guide and a brief Google search to gather the meaning and purpose of each painting.

The first and the best painting that I saw at the museum is the one whose snapshot has been provided above. It is called the 'Annunciation' by Henry Tanner. The first thing that appealed to me about the painting is the beautiful way in which the artist has used colors in this work.
