Differentiated Instruction

Introduction

This world is full of diversity, and its beauty lies in this fact solely. If everyone in this world were born with the same personality, same interest, same habits, same short comings, same behavior, same traits, same qualities and same talents, the world would be such a monotonous place to live. Variety is the spice of life; however, the world judges us all on preset standards regardless of the differences that exist in mankind. Same case is applicable in an educational arena. Not every student is similar in knowledge, skills, interest and aptitude; these all factors can be extremely diverse within a single class room.

However, irrespective of the differences that exist among students, they are required and expected to get the hang of the same skills and concepts, compelling the students to excel in a challenging environment and considerably stressful conditions. It can be detrimental for many students, if they do not fall in the criterion required by the standards of the curriculum.

Therefore, there should be a medium via which students must be provided with various options for taking in and grasping the required knowledge and concepts. Acknowledging this issue, the board devised a teaching method which would enable the teacher to take the instructional approach for all students together, based on their individual skills and interest (Tomlinson, 2001).

The model of differentiated instruction was devised for this purpose. According to this model, rather than expecting the students to alter and qualify themselves for the curriculum, the instructor should be pliable in designing the curriculum and delivery of information for students. This will undoubtedly raise the flexibility of the teachers and reduce the impediments that usually confine the students' access to proper learning and knowledge.

The paper begins with the introduction of differentiated instruction, then moves on to its components, usage, benefits and practices in inclusive class.

Differentiated Instruction

Definition

The recognition of students' diverse background with respect to knowledge, skills, language proficiency and interests and to respond accordingly, in terms of curriculum presentation is known as differentiated instruction. It is a method, of coaching and to educate students of contrary and varying abilities in the same class. It enables teachers to take the various and dissimilar factors of the students in the calculation while designing and planning the instructions. Established on this, teachers can easily propose and formulate a studious atmosphere that addresses the variety of learning manners, skills and pursuits found within a class. The whole concept or intention is to meet the student where he/she currently is and support in learning, eventually maximizing the growth of that student.

Structure and Usage

Differentiated instruction establishes that a student learns and grasps the concept best when the course of study is in accordance with their prevailing interests, skills and experiences. The pivotal point in learning occurs when students are pressed a little past that point ...
