Santa Maria Maggiore is a very old Roman Catholic Marian basilica of Rome. It is one of the four foremost or four papal basilicas, which, simultaneously with St. Lawrence outside the partitions, were previously mentioned to as the five "patriarchal basilicas" of Rome, affiliated with the five ancient patriarchal sees of Christendom (see Pentarchy).
