The purpose of the study is to determine the possible reasons due to which the data loss occurs. The study will help to find out the way we can reduce the data loss, and how can we secure the data from the data loss and theft.

Research Project on Data Loss
Introduction
The research problem is to find out the way or ways to reduce data loss, and to identify how data can be protected from data loss and theft. Data can be private and confidential, and may include information that people do not want others to know. This is especially true for software companies as they do not want their confidential data to go in the hands of competitors. Furthermore, data loss or theft affects people in all fields. They may be students, teachers, or anyone else. Imagine losing all the photos from your PC or laptop. The memories of many years will be lost. This has a number of negative effects associated with data loss and theft. People will be stressed out, and suffer from other emotional problems.
The boundary of this research will be software companies in the UK. Most of the memory sticks or other storage devices that have confidential information remain lost forever. However, it is not feasible or sensible for organisations to take such a risk. It is better to implement security guidelines to protect themselves from any kind of damage. There are chances that the information in the storage device will fall in the wrong hands. Companies should not leave any loophole in their security measures, because it could result in great damage. Investing in software like Data Loss Prevention could result in the company filling in the gaps that may lead to data loss or theft. When there are methods available, then why not avail them for the betterment of the entire organisation?
Rationale
The research is worth doing, because data loss and data theft has become a rising concern for organisations the world over. In order to protect data, and avoid the emotional and financial implications of data loss or theft, this research is imperative.
Research Questions
What precautionary steps to be taken for protecting data?
What sort of validations and restriction must be applied to secure the data?
What are the causes of data loss and theft?
How can data loss and theft be reduced or eliminated?
Literature Review
Research in the past has been done on this topic on an international level. According to Bhattacharya (2008, pp. 01), “small businesses often display a lack of concern towards cybercrime and information security problems. A lack of concern usually results in delayed or incorrectly implemented security measures, which increases vulnerability to cybercrime”. He investigated the correlation between leadership style and level of concern toward problems linked to security of information. The results from the investigation showed that organisations need to display more than one leadership style to ensure appropriate concern ...
