The International Baccalaureate concept was formulated during the 1960's by a group of eminent international educationalists who felt the need for a curriculum and assessment model which recognised the importance of fostering international understanding through education. Pre-eminent in this pioneering work was Alec Peterson, Professor of Educational Studies at the University of Oxford, Robert Blackburn, Gérard Renaud, Bob Leach and the eminent historian Asa Briggs.The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) has grown to become one of the most highly respected providers of curriculum and assessment throughout the world. It is indeed a fitting testimony to the pioneering work of the IBO founders that last year there were over 1,500,000 candidate entries from 1,558 schools situated in 121 countries.The International Baccalaureate Organisation aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.The International Baccalaureate Organization is a non-profit educational organisation governed by a 17-member Council of the Foundation and is funded by fees from member schools, with additional income from workshops.Three programmesThe IBO offers three programmes to a wide variety of schools located throughout the world:1) The Diploma Programme (DP), for students in the final two years of school before university2) The Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16 3) The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is for students aged 7 to 11The answer lies in the philosophical commitment to upholding high principles of fundamental human rights as articulated in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Latterly, the IBO has become an agent for promoting international-mindedness, intercultural understanding and global peace. Many of its syllabuses have pioneered curriculum reform throughout the world.
Currently, a course on peace studies which has been introduced into the curriculum of IBO schools is leading the way in the understanding of conflict, conflict resolution and global peace.
