Chapter 1: Introduction
Background
The term "Person-Centred" as opposed to some of the earlier names applied to Rogers' approach-Nondirective, Rogerian, and Client-Centred--is intended by Rogers to encompass all aspects of the varied relationships to which the approach has been applied. These include counselling, teaching and learning, group work, friendships, as well as workshops and international relations (Rogers, 1980).
The actual term Person-Centred describes the emphasis of the approach. It is the person (client, student, group member, etc.) who is in control of her own life, and, ultimately the counselling. Consequently, counselling is geared to responding to the client's needs. For the duration of this study the term Person-Centred will be used when alluding t Rogers' approach except when the historical context requires the use of a more dated term.
Aims and objectives
In this research the major aims is to get an in depth study of person centred counselling and to get an idea of the framework and its element.
Research questions
This research aims to answer the following question
•What is person centred approach?
•What is the framework for person centred counselling?
•What are their elements?
•How it will affect the trainee's external relationships?
Reliability and Validity
The term bias is a historically unfriendly pejorative frequently directed at secondary research. As much as possible, the absence of bias constitutes conditions in which reliability and validity can increase. Most vulnerable to charges of bias are secondary research inquiries with a low saturation point (i.e., a small N), limited interrater reliability, and unclear data triangulation. Positivist studies make attempts to control external variables that may bias data; interpretivist studies contend that it is erroneous to assume that it is possible to do any research—particularly human science research— that is uncontaminated by personal and political sympathies and that bias can occur in the laboratory as well as in the classroom. While value-free inquiry may not exist in any research, the critical issue may not be one of credibility but, rather, one of recognizing divergent ways of answering questions associated with purpose and intent. Secondary research can meet determinants of reliability and validity if primary contextual variables remain consistent and if researchers are as ...
