Introduction

Corn (also called Indian corn in Canada ) is a plant tropical annual herb of the family Poaceae (grasses), widely cultivated as a cereal for its grains rich in starch , but also as a fodder plant . The term also refers to the corn kernel itself, the size of a pea. This species, originally from Mexico , was the staple food of Native Americans before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. The plant was deified in the ancient civilizations of Central and South America and was known among the tribes of North America as one of three sisters . Introduced in Europe in the sixteenth century , it is now cultivated worldwide and became the first cereal to the global rice and wheat . With the advent of hybrid seeds in the first half of the twentieth century , and recently transgenic seeds, corn is a symbol of intensive agriculture. Its common name is corn. maízMany other common names have been applied to this crop, including Indian wheat, Indian corn and wheat of Barbary. Obsolete for the most part, these names reflect the confusion that has long prevailed in Europe about the origin of the plant.

Where it is Cultivated

The corn is grown in more than 140 million hectares, with an annual output of more than 580 million metric tons. Corn is grown in 66 tropical countries and is of economic

importance in 61 of them, each of which planting more than 50,000 hectares with a total of about 61.5 million hectares and an annual production of 111 million metric tons. The average yield of maize in the tropics is 1 800 kg / ha compared to a global average of more than 4 000 kg /ha. The average maize yield in temperate zones is 7,000 kg / ha. Maize cultivation in the temperate zone is, however, a larger cycle than most tropical maize. Therefore, tropical maize yields, when compared with that of temperate maize is not so low, yet the productivity of maize in the tropics is lower than in areas Plada temperature. There are some exceptions where tropical maize productivity compares favorably with corn in temperate environments, such as corn grown in the winter in the tropics.

While corn is widely grown throughout the world, most of the world rests on a few countries. Among them, the United States and China stand out well and represent 60% of the amount of maize produced worldwide. By performing 40% of the world, the United States alone weigh heavily on the market. Behind these two major players, found five major production areas, including the European Union, each producing between 10 and 60 million tonnes, making together a little over 20% of world production.
