First of all, then, we have to address the Divine reason of her Compassion. It is very dubious if we might ever state of any thing in God's works that it was "merely ornamental." There is certain thing in the concept of meagre ornament which appears at variance with the actuality of God, with the magnificence of His ease, with His adorable reality. To presume our Lady's dolors to be so much ornamental pathos supplemented to the Incarnation even for the holy end of stimulating some added qualifications of love, would engage still farther inquiries considering the feature and perfections of God, His tenderness in the direction of His animals, and the merciful implication which there is in every agony and sorrow through all creation. It is not so straightforward to glimpse how he who should contain such a outlook of our Blessed Lady's sorrows could be apologised from the largest irreverence, or even from implicit blasphemy. God absolutely had a reason in them. He has a reason in everything which He ordains. But His reason in so very assessed a characteristic of the Incarnation as the unutterably woeful destiny of the Mother of God should have been proportioned to the magnitude of the secret itself, and of that bigger secret of which it is a part. It could not have been a straightforward pathos. God could not have martyred one of His animals only to hurl a poetical halo around the strong truths of Calvary. Neither could it have been only a message to us.
