The American penny should be phased out of use because it costs more to produce than it is worth, most people won't bother to save a penny, and most items are priced by five cents.

The penny while only being worth one cent costs 1.76 cents to produce. How many people will bend over to pick up a penny found on the ground? I know I do not. I will pick up a nickel, a dime, or a quarter. I know people that even toss pennies for amusement. Its true goods are priced at .99 cents intervals, but how many are .96 .97 or .94 cents? Consider even .39 or .29 cents etc. Prices ending in 5 or whole amounts are more common.

The penny while only being worth one cent costs 1.23 cents to produce. The expenditure to make a penny initially surpassed the worth of the penny in 2006, temporarily increasing to about 2 cents in 2007 prior to declining once more. (Mathur, 2009: 430-433) The stuff consumed to make a penny is the reason that makes it overheads more than its face value. Pennies have 97.5 percent zinc, with 2.5 percent copper to furnish them their typical coppery color. Value of these metals have gone up noticeably in the beginning of 21st century, in return to market demands and rising parameters of extraction, that has made the outlay of metals mining very high. The government might save money by not producing a coin that costs more to produce than its face value.
