Arguably August Wilson's most renowned work, Fences explores the life and relationships of the Maxson family. This going drama was in writing in 1983 and acquired Wilson his first Pulitzer Prize.

The protagonist, Troy Maxon is the restless trash-collector and previous baseball athlete. Though profoundly flawed, he represents the struggle for justice and equitable remedy throughout the 1950s. Troy also represents human nature's reluctance to identify and accept social change. In the playwright's setting description, symbols attached to his feature can be found: the house, the incomplete barrier, the porch, and the makeshift baseball joined to the tree branch.
