Introduction

Since oil was discovered in the UAE more than 30 years ago, the country has undergone a transition from an impoverished country to a modern state, with a high standard of living. Within the last decade the UAE has faced an impressive transition from a country solely financed by its oil industry, to a country with a much greater economic diversification. This non-oil diversification is the key element in ensuring that the standard of living in the UAE can be sustained when oil supply will no longer be sufficient to uphold the economy. The focus on and commitment to this diversification is immense, and particularly Dubai has evolved to become one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The introduction of Free Zones, with liberal business environments, has been a key move in attracting FDI to Dubai. The growth that the Dubai is currently facing is a strong indicator that the efforts have been highly successful.

Case Study: Dubai Internet City

According to the case study, the Dubai Internet City (DIC) was installed in October 2000. Despite bearing the title "Internet," the free zone was conceived as a hub for all data and communications expertise companies. Although the initial design concentrated mainly on genuine land parcel, the move to an innovative, one-stop approach was nearly immediate. DIC not only suggested its purchasers agency space, but managed visas, incorporation, journey bookings, work allows, etc. To support purchasers farther, DIC set up a state-of-the-art telecommunications company.
