My Career Theory

The process of career development is related to social adjustment of human beings. Positive career development depends on planning, deciding, and exploring. My career history includes professions of nursing and counseling. From 1996 to 2009, I worked as a nursing assistant. After that, I switched to the career of substance abuse counselor.

According to Brown (1996), values are important determinants of human behavior. They are also relevant to the decision making process in career. I believe that values have always been relevant to my choice of career

My reported MBTI type is ESTJ. It depicts that my decisions are based on values. My choice of career was largely influenced by the concerns of people. My choice of nursing and counseling as my career supports this argument.

According to my MBTI report, the skills I possess include extraversion, sensing, thinking and judging. I believe that all these skills are related to my choice of profession. I always focus on the outer world of people. I am good at sensing the difficulties of people.

Values-Based, Holistic Model of Career & Life-Role

There are diverse factors that influence the career choice of people. One of these factors is the values of people. Another factor that influences the choice of career of people is the importance people assign to their life roles. The value based holistic model of career and life role emphasizes the traditional approaches to career planning. In addition, there are also other approaches that emphasize the value an important factor in choosing a career.

Previously occupational direction was considered a process of assisting people to match their individual qualities with those required by different professions. The purpose of this process was to improve the satisfaction of employees.

The Social Cognition Career Theory (SCCT) also addresses the concerns of gender and culture. This theory also highlights social contacts and events that interact with the career choice of individuals. The theory addresses diverse issues including personals goals and expectations. According to this theory, these factors affect the career choice of individuals. SCCT suggests that the choice of career is affects by the values and perceptions the individual formulates. There are diverse sources that shape the perception of individuals. These sources include learning, persuasion, and personal performance of individuals. These factors work together in the process of career development. My values and beliefs have also been shaped by my education and experience.

My Career Options

The occupation that I have chosen for me is counseling and nursing. In order to perform successfully in this career, individuals need social skills, and concern for others. My core values include altruism and health and safety of others (Bennett et al, 2009).

Nursing is an in-demand profession. The average salary of this profession depends on different factors. One of the factors is education. There is a shortage of nurses in the United States.
