Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, an industrial suburb of Chicago, to an African American working-class family. Other members of the Jackson family also went on to have extraordinary musical careers. Michael's youngest sister, Janet Jackson, found particular success, not only as a singer, but on television (Dineen, 12).
