Executive Summary

The Federal and State governments have been given different powers and limitations. This is due to the fact that there needs to be a clear distinction between both these governments so that they may function smoothly.

The Federal government has roles that help it to maintain the national welfare, while State governments are given responsibilities to maintain the welfare of the citizens of its state. In brief it can be stated that there is a difference in ranks between both governments with the Federal government having all the major responsibilities such as fiscal and monetary policies, national defense, printing of currency, and other major roles.

Introduction

The Federal and State governments have been assigned different powers by the constitution. Most of these powers are distinct but there are a few powers that overlap. The Federal government is responsible for major roles and decisions while the roles and powers of the State government are limited to its state.

Powers Extended to the Federal Government

The Federal government has many roles that are distinct from the roles of the State governments. Of these roles, the role of developing the fiscal and monetary policies is the most important. It has the roles of maintaining the Federal Reserve's and printing currency.

The next important role is to regulate international and interstate trade. Every aspect of all the trade is maintained and supervised by the Federal government. They are also responsible for making the laws which govern trade.

The security of the State also lies with the Federal government. All the armed forces work under its regulation. It is also responsible for taking decisions regarding war and fulfilling the requirements of the navy, army, air force, and other forces.

These tasks are the main functions of the Federal government. It is also responsible for making the rules that will help guide these functions (bensguide.gpo.gov).

Powers Extended to the State Government

The State government works under the supervision of the Federal government but they have some power which they can use without the interference or supervision of the Federal government. Of these powers, the power to issue licenses is the most prominent power. State governments can issue licenses to any parties for any specific purpose as long as it is in conformity with the United States law.

It also has the power to regulate interstate business along with the Federal government. The rules of trade cannot be changed but they have the power to make some provisions.

Elections can be conducted by the State government with support from the Federal government. Apart from conducting elections, they can also establish local governments and run them according to their policies.

The State government does not have the power to change the constitution, but they have the power to make amendments in it as long as they do not harm the interest of the nation. If any policy is not mentioned in the ...
