Causes and Major Outcomes of Battles of Saratoga (September 19 and October 7, 1777)

Introduction

The Battles of Saratoga were fought between American Patriot Troops and British Troops during American War of Independence. Historians have regarded these two battles as turning point which significantly contributed in deciding the fate of British rule in America.

Causes of the Battles of Saratoga

In 18th century 1777, British generals formulated a plan for bringing an immediate end to their war with American forces. British war generals wanted to effectively separate New England territory from the rest of colonial territories of America under British rule by seizing the control over the city of New York, Hudson River and the Albany. To achieve this objective, British war generals devised a strategy to capture these three crucial territories by attacking them from three sides. The first side was from south, Canada where British war General John Burgoyne was in command and led the 8,000 and marched towards his target. Second side was the east of Lake Ontario where Barry St. Leger was in command and directed his troops towards the target from there. Third side was the north of New York City where British war General Gen. Howe was in command and moved his trooped from there. All three British war Generals were in coordination with each other and decided to meet along with their troops at Albany for destroying and crushing the rebel armies (American troops). But General Howe at some point in time during his procession towards Albany to crush rebel American armies decided to change his plans. General Howe decided to bring his troops south from the city of New York in order to invade the Philadelphia (the capital of Patriots at that time) and give surprise to the American rebel armies.
