Analysis of Two Case Studies
Introduction
This report is an analysis of case studies of two organizations with the perspective of their organizational structure and organizational culture. The organizations selected for this analysis are two of the biggest retailers in UK, Tesco and Sainsbury's. This report will discuss the organizational structure of both the companies and their effectiveness. Organizational culture, team work environment and approach to leadership in the organizations will also be discussed. Relevant theories were used to analyze any similarity or difference in both organizations.
Sainsbury's and Tesco, both are leading retailers in the UK. The nature of their business requires huge workforce and timely management of operations. The workforce directly interacts with customers on a daily basis, so the quality of customer satisfaction is what drives the retail business. The time constraint makes the nature of operations vigorous thus excluding the senior management from direct operational decision making. The organizational culture that these organizations set for themselves effects their brand to a considerable extent, because, a huge number of customers directly contact the majority of their workforce.
Background information of the organizations
Tesco is a UK based grocery retailer company. It is one the biggest retailer firms in the world with revenues only behind Wal-Mart and Carrefore. Tesco offers one of the largest varieties of food and non-food products in its stores around the world. It operates with an array of retail businesses formats, which range from small stores to mega hypermarkets. At the end of the FY2012, Tesco had over 200,000 employees in 6214 store in 14 countries, spanning over three continents.
J Sainsbury Plc is UK based holding company. It is primarily engaged in retailing services but also have businesses in financial services and real estate investments. Sainsbury has a wide network of 934 stores across UK with 557 of the stores being supermarkets. The Sainsbury supermarkets offer a wide range of food and non-food products. It also operates internet based shopping website, Sainsbury's online. The web operations have reached 93% of UK household. Findings
