Overview of Barclays plc
Barclays is one of the leading financial services providers globally. The company is engaged in retail and commercial banking, credit cards, investment banking, wealth management and investment management services. The company's operations are spread across 50 countries spanning over the Europe, the US, and Africa. It is headquartered in London, United Kingdom and employs about 151,300 people. The company recorded revenues of £31,440 million ($48,600 million) in the financial year (FY) ended December 2010, an increase of 8% over FY2009. Operating income in FY2010 amounted to £5,797 million ($8,961 million), an increase of 33.7% over FY2009.The net profit was £3,564 million ($5,509 million) in FY2010, a decrease of 62.1% over FY2009. Established in 1896, Barclays originated as a British banking and trust firm registered under the name Barclay & Company. The company assumed the name Barclays Bank in 1917. In 1918, the company amalgamated with the London, Provincial and South Western Bank to become one of the UK's largest banks.
