Cognition in Children with Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Introduction

Children with neuropsychiatric disorders mostly have cognitive control deficits. These deficits are reduced when motivation is increased through tangible resources. Deficits in cognitive controls ability have been observed in children with neuropsychiatric disorders (such as ADHD). However, this paper investigates the causes and consequences of ADHD. These causes plague the children with ADHD throughout their adulthood and consequently result in underachievement, special classes and extra academic tutoring.

Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a development disorder that deals with attention and hyperactivity in the childhood years. Children suffering from this disorder have a hard time paying attention to lectures and have trouble keeping up with their peers in school. This leads to underachievement, participation in special classes, and additional academic tutoring.

Causes of ADHD

According to a study involving parents and teachers of children with ADHD, there were six factors that were found to have causal relationship with ADHD in children. However, the six causal factors identified by the study overlap in various terminologies in the literature for e.g. brain damage and brain function have been identified as two causal factors that overlap. According to the study, the foremost causes of ADHD in children are the genetic and neurological factors. These neurological factors occur during the pregnancy or after birth, during the development of the nervous system. Moreover, a neuro-chemical imbalance or heredity disposition also plays a vital role in causing ADHD in children. Furthermore, there are psychological factors that can cause ADHD in children. These include the environment that the child experiences at home or at school. The home environment is the most important since this is the place where a child spent his most time, and develops many facets of his/her personality (Dryer, Kiernan, & Tyson, 2006).

Consequences for Children with ADHD

The problems of underachievement, special classes, need for tutoring, and impaired neuropsychological performance plague children with neuropsychiatric disorders throughout their adolescence creating social and psychological problem throughout their adulthood. The disorders related to the neuropsychiatric disorders such as, anxiety and depression is also correlated with intellectual disability. However, studies suggest that some intellectual disability is core to the children with neuropsychiatric. Moreover, familial aggregation is also an important aspect of the neuropsychiatric disorder, and it is imperative that the siblings of people with neuropsychiatric disorders are at an increased risk of having neuropsychiatric disorders.
