Introduction

Practitioners and academics have considered the management of change in organizations ever since management emerged as a discipline, at the beginning of the twentieth century. The arrival of large, complex organizations after the Second World War heightened interest in this subject and thus there is a large body of thinking about change that has been developed over the last fifty years. While some of the challenges facing the NHS are novel, many of them may benefit from the application of concepts that were developed several decades ago.
